Biodiversity and Land Use

Protecting Nature While Enabling Responsible Growth

Nature and biodiversity stewardship is integral to AEL’s long-term resilience and sustainable value creation. We recognise that safeguarding ecosystems is essential to business continuity, regulatory readiness, and community trust. We are strengthening biodiversity governance, conducting structured site-level assessments, and aligning with the TNFD framework to better understand nature-related risks and dependencies. Through this approach, we are progressing towards our commitment of no net loss and a transition to a nature-positive future.

Our Contributions

Applying TNFD-aligned LEAP methodology across priority locations
Implementing biodiversity management plans using the mitigation hierarchy
Integrating biodiversity risks into enterprise risk management
Advancing afforestation, restoration, and habitat enhancement initiatives
Building internal awareness and capability on biodiversity stewardship

Our Commitment to Biodiversity

Planting 100 million trees by 2030 on 1t.org – the “Trillion Trees Platform” of the World Economic Forum.

Identification and documentation of CR, EN, and VU species (IUCN Red List), along with endemic species and those listed under the Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act, 2022, within project areas.

Identification and conservation of high biodiversity value sites beyond protected zones.

Mine Reclamation and Ecological Restoration at PEKB

At the PEKB mining site in Chhattisgarh, reclaimed land has been restored with afforestation, habitat creation, and renewable energy integration. Over 1.5 million trees have been planted, transforming mined land into productive ecosystems illustrating AEL’s commitment to biodiversity positive outcomes.

  • 9 MW solar power plant commissioned on 30 acres of reclaimed land.
  • 4 lakh tonnes of CO₂e to be avoided over 25 years.
  • 548 hectares restored out of ~1,898 hectares mined.
